In Conversation with H.E. John Dramani Mahama
Ghana’s Position and Prospects within the Africa–Europe Partnership
European Strategic Initiative organised a discussion with H.E. John Dramani Mahama, former President of the Republic of Ghana (2012–2017), focusing on Ghana’s political, economic and security outlook, as well as the country’s role within Africa–European Union relations.
The discussions highlighted Ghana’s distinctive position in West Africa, built on a long-standing tradition of institutional stability, peaceful democratic transitions and regional engagement. These strengths have enabled the country to develop close relations with the European Union and to play an important role in regional dynamics across West Africa.
The exchange also addressed the challenges facing Ghana, including the consequences of the economic and financial crisis, the deteriorating security environment in the Sahel, and broader stability and security issues in the Gulf of Guinea.
The discussion provided an opportunity to examine Ghana’s prospects in a changing regional environment and to explore opportunities for strengthening the partnership between West Africa and the European Union in response to shared challenges.
